Phoenix Personal Injury Lawyer
Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona and one of the largest in the country, spread across a grid of wide, fast streets and some of the busiest freeways in the Southwest. An injury claim here is an Arizona claim, decided under Arizona law.
Arizona law, not California's
Boyd Johnson is licensed in Arizona as well as California. The rules that matter most to a client, including how long you have to file and what happens when a government vehicle or road is involved, are different here. Read how Arizona differs before you assume anything about your deadline.
The city's own plan
In September 2022 the Phoenix City Council unanimously adopted a Road Safety Action Plan, Moving to Vision Zero, with the goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2050, and set aside $10 million a year to carry it out. The city has said publicly that it is behind on some of its goals, including reducing pedestrian deaths and nighttime crashes.
Wide arterials, high speeds and long distances between signals make Phoenix a hard city to walk in, and people on foot are among those hurt worst. Read pedestrian accidents if that is what happened.
Who writes the report
- City streets — the Phoenix Police Department, whose Vehicular Crimes Unit investigates the most serious crashes
- The I-10, I-17, Loop 101, Loop 202 and other freeways — the Arizona Department of Public Safety
Get the report number at the scene if you can. If not, note the agency, the date and the nearest cross streets or milepost.
Where the injured are taken
Phoenix has several Level I trauma centers, among them Valleywise Health Medical Center, which became Arizona's first in 1978, Banner University Medical Center Phoenix and St. Joseph's Hospital. Children are often taken to Phoenix Children's, the state's only ACS-verified Level I pediatric trauma center.
Wherever you were treated, ask for your records and keep every bill and discharge sheet.
Where the case would be heard
Phoenix is in Maricopa County. An injury lawsuit from a crash here would be filed in the Maricopa County Superior Court, whose main courthouses are in downtown Phoenix. Most cases settle before trial.
